In 2004, New York City high school students formed the Urban Youth Collaborative to fight for a voice in high school reform. Young people in the Bronx and Brooklyn had experienced a dramatic, top-down restructuring of large high schools, without opportunities to provide input or to raise concerns about the overcrowding and safety problems on their campuses. In response, youth leaders of the Future of Tomorrow, Make the Road by Walking, Sistas and Brothas United of the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition and Youth On the Move/Mothers On the Move, in collaboration with the NYU Community Involvement Program, began organizing a citywide force of young people.

About the Student Union

The UYC Student Union is made up of youth from across the city, including groups from Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens. Students attend more than two dozen schools, concentrated in Regions 1, 2, 4 and 5.

What is the purpose of the Union?
The reason why we are creating the student union is because of the experience of many students in NYC. When we walk into school the first thing we see is a metal detector cops and x-ray machines that the city believes will help the kids and the school. WE DISAGREE!! We believe what the city does in our schools actually makes kids want to be more violent. It doesn’t give us any privacy at all, and it just scares us. Having so many cops in one building intimidates and agitates student and increases tension rather than decreasing it. The basic point of the union is to show and explain to the city of New York that it is better to decrease the metal detectors and cops and look for other ways to decrease conflict in our schools and increase true safety in learning.

Why you should join the UYC student union
The reason why you should join the USC student union is because it gives students the opportunity to make changes in their school. It can give us confidence to express what we think an d what issues we should target next. Together, we take action and implement various strategies to improve schools and communities.
